At Dolton Church of England Primary School we believe that learning about world religions is a vital part of a child’s life education and that this subject contributes largely to the pupil's developing understanding of the school key values -
Respect, Forgiveness, Friendship, Courage and Aspiration. Religious Education also helps pupils to develop a mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs, and for those without faith.
We believe that the principal aim of religious education is to allow children to make sense of beliefs, understand the impact and difference these beliefs make to peoples lives and then make key connections to help children understand the world in which they live in. This in turn ensures children can gain the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to handle the questions raised by religion and belief, while reflecting on their own ideas and ways of living. We feel that this empowers children to develop a sense of empathy and understanding that is indicative of our school’s vision, values and Christian distinctiveness.
Our RE syllabus is an enquiry based model where we ask 'Big questions' and actively encourage children to investigate, question, reflect and evaluate during all of their RE lessons. We actively remind pupils that religion is both globally and locally, a vital and dynamic aspect of life. We also feel strongly that children should be encouraged to take a wider world view of religion and recognise that they belong to an increasingly diverse Devon community.
We follow the 2019 Devon agreed syllabus and agree with the purpose of this study.
